Grab Your 5 Minutes of Fame...Be The First to Record a Green Big Day Record For Your Region!

Have you looked longingly at Big Day records in the annual ABA listings and thought "I'll never beat those numbers"?... Well your lucky day has arrived!

The field of Green Big Days is wide open and ripe for YOU to claim the record for your county, state or country.

So what are you waiting for? It's springtime: the neotrops are here and all the birds are singing. You already have everything you need for birding - now all you need is a bike, canoe, skateboard, or just a sturdy pair of shoes!

Green BIG Day Guidelines

Green Big Day Rules will generally conform to the ABA Recording Rules (as amended 1999) with the following clarifications: Count can start anytime after midnight and end anytime before midnight within a single 24 hour period. Once count has started competitors must refrain from using any motorized vehicle until counting has ended. Approved human-powered or natural methods include: walking, hiking, running, skiing, bicycle, kayak, sailboat, etc. Heard only birds are acceptable subject to confirmation by all members of the team. Competition to be by team of 2 or more, only species seen or heard by all members of the team may be counted. Single person records will be accepted and posted with the designation “single”. The responsible use of recorded calls is acceptable. No time is added for breaks. Records will be recorded for the following geographical areas: County, State and Country.

Records should be submitted in one of 3 categories within 2 classes.

Class I: CLEAN GREEN (CG)

This class requires that only non-motorized, human or natural (e.g. sail) powered methods be used for all portions of the record attempt, including travel from each participants home to the starting point of the count, during the count, and travel to each participants home from the count.

CG:H-2-H (Home Loop Route back to Home)

Count starts at the Home of one of the team members and ends at the same Home.

This method limits a team’s geographical reach to that area that can be traveled from and to home within 24 hours. Additional team members must travel to and from the starting home using only human-powered methods.

CG:A-2-A (Point A Loop Route back to Point A)

Count starts at one point (A) and ends at the same point (A).

This method allows teams to compete anywhere without the limitation of starting from a team member’s home. Because this category allows for a starting point other than from home it may allow for travel to species rich areas allowing for higher species counts. Travel to and from starting point must only be by human-powered methods e.g Cyclists from Sacramento, California intending to establish a Green Big Day record for San Diego County must use only bicycles to travel from their homes in Sacramento to San Diego, complete their Green Big Day on bicycles (or by foot, etc.), then must return home to Sacramento by bicycle.

CG:A-2-B (Point A to Point B)

Count starts at one point (A) and ends at a different point (B).

This method allows teams to compete anywhere without the limitation of starting from a team member’s home and will likely yield the highest species count as birders are not limited by having to loop back to the starting point. Because this category allows for a starting point other than from home it may allow for travel to species rich areas allowing for higher species counts. Travel to and from starting point and ending point must only be by human-powered methods (as above).

Class II: MODIFIED GREEN (MG)

This class allows the use of motorized methods for travel to and from the starting and finishing point of the count but not at any time during the count.

MG:H-2-H (Home Loop Route back to Home)

Count starts at the Home of one of the team members and ends at the same Home.

This method limits a team’s geographical reach to that area that can be traveled from and to home within 24 hours. Additional team members may travel to and from the starting home using any method, though low-impact, non-motorized methods are encouraged.

MG:A-2-A (Point A Loop Route back to Point A)

Count starts at one point (A) and ends at the same point (A).

This method allows teams to compete anywhere without the limitation of starting from a team member’s home or having to travel to start point and from end point by non-motorized means. Because this category allows for a starting point other than from home it may allow for travel to species rich areas allowing for higher species counts. Because this method starts and ends at the same point, no additional motorized travel is required to return to starting point. Participants may travel to and from the starting/ending point using any method, though low-impact, non-motorized methods are encouraged.

MG:A-2-B (Point A to Point B)

Count starts at one point (A) and ends at a different point (B).

This method allows teams to compete anywhere without the limitation of starting from a team member’s home or having to travel to start point and from end point by non-motorized means. Because this category allows for a starting point other than from home it may allow for travel to species rich areas allowing for higher species counts. Participants may travel to and from the starting/ending point using any method, though low-impact, non-motorized methods are encouraged. This method will likely yield the highest species count as birders are not limited by having to loop back to the starting point.
